ROTOBOOST and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions Sign MOU to Drive Net-Zero Goals Through Innovative Pre-Combustion Carbon Removal

Doha, Qatar, 26 January 2025: ROTOBOOST, a pioneer in hydrogen fuel and pre-combustion carbon removal solutions, and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, a premier ship repair facility, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the retrofit of maritime vessels with pre-combustion carbon removal technology and hydrogen-blended fuel systems. This strategic partnership aims to accelerate the path towards net-zero emissions and ensure compliance with evolving global maritime regulations.

As part of the MOU, the two organizations will work together on integrating advanced pre-combustion carbon capture and removal systems into vessel operations, and utilizing hydrogen as a blended fuel. These initiatives will enable significant reductions in Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. In addition, the collaboration focuses on enhancing operational efficiency, such as Boil-off Gas (BOG) management, while ensuring compliance with International Maritime Organization (lMO) regulatory targets for decarbonization.

Kaisa Nikulainen, Chief Executive Officer ROTOBOOST, stated:“Our partnership with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions marks a critical step in advancing sustainable maritime practices. Together, we aim to deliver cutting-edge solutions that not only meet regulatory standards but also pave the way for a greener future. Our Thermo-Catalytic Decomposition (TCD) technology transforms natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon, creating valuable by-products that contribute to a circular economy. This innovation supports various industries in the region, including battery manufacturing and steelmaking, aluminum smelting, fostering sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.”

Mr. Jos J.A.A. Goris, Chief Executive Officer Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, highlighted: “The MoU with ROTOBOOST emphasizes our strong commitment to collaborate and deliver safe, high quality, decarbonization technology solutions that will address emission challenges faced by the maritime industry. We are proud of this opportunity to contribute to sustainability and enhance our shipyard’s technical capability and environmental stewardship in delivering services aligned to regulatory decarbonization targets.”

The MoU entails pilot retrofits to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of pre-combustion carbon removal technology and hydrogen-blended fuel systems. Positive outcomes from the pilot retrofits will pave the way for scalable application of the decarbonization technology solution across the local, regional and international shipping community.
