PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd (PRSB) and ROTOBOOST (Shanghai) Hydrogen Energy Technology Co Ltd (ROTOBOOST) entered into a collaboration to develop a first-of-its-kind methane pyrolysis system for production of low-cost low-carbon hydrogen and carbon product, in line with both organisations’ sustainability aspirations.

The pyrolysis system converts methane – a greenhouse gas and primary component of natural gas – into hydrogen, as well as solid carbon that can be used for various industrial purposes.
“We are excited to join forces with PETRONAS, one of the first energy majors to recognise the transformative potential of low-carbon hydrogen technology, “ said Kaisa Emilia Nikulainen, Chief- Executive Officer of ROTOBOOST.

The collaboration will look into, among others, the establishment of a pilot plant equipped with integrated carbon treatment, and discussion on potential scale up and commercialization upon successful pilot of the jointly developed system.

“The compact and efficient design of ROTOBOOST’s Thermo-catalytic Decomposition (TCD) of Methane process significantly surpasses traditional steam methane reforming systems in both size and energy requirements. Its ability to function optimally with lower electrical power, even in offshore locations, positions it as a game-changer in decarbonisation, “ said Nikulainen.
